Warning: The following post contains spoilers for the Game of Thrones finale. If you don’t want to know what happens, turn back now!
At the end of the Game of Thrones finale, Grey Worm announces that he’s headed to Naath. But what is Naath, and why does our Unsullied friend want to go there so badly?
The reason is pretty sad, so prepare yourself. The island of Naath was the homeland of Missandei, Daenerys’ trusted advisor who was beheaded atop the walls of King’s Landing at the end of the final season’s fourth episode. Missandei was also Grey Worm’s lover, and earlier in the season, they made plans to go to Naath together some day. They were all excited to check out the beaches on the island, until….whoosh. The Mountain’s sword put an end to all that.
When finale viewers heard Grey Worm’s plans to go to Naath—even though Missandei is now dead—they were overcome with emotion. It stood out as one of the more moving parts of the finale, along with Jon Snow finally getting to pet Ghost, of course.
Here’s how Game of Thrones fans reacted to Grey Worm’s plans to go to Naath:
Grey Worm and Missandei met back in season three, when they were both in service to Daenerys Targaryen (RIP). In season four, Missandei told Grey Worm all about Naath as she taught him the Common Tongue. Speaking of common tongue, the two finally kiss in season five, making them one of GoT fans’ favorite couples in the seven kingdoms.
